Third time is the charm! by Jeff Davis
When the KPS family comes together, it’s usually a pretty good time. But, when you add the amazing talent of KPS students, it becomes something more… much more! The 3rd Annual KPS Talent Showcase was more than just a talent show... it was an incredible mix of singing, dancing, and unbridled creativity!
The video of the show will be available soon! Watch the backpacks for details!
Enjoy the photos, and remember, there is a gallery of 200 photos from the dress rehearsal and the show in our online gallery! If you don’t know the password, email me, president@kpspto.org (but you would already know it if you were signed up for our email alerts!).
Technical difficulties? Sure, but the CHS A/V club students kept at it, never quitting or giving up, and they kept working until everyone had a chance to make their debut on the big GFMS stage! Uncooperative and outdated equipment couldn’t stop them! Michelle Disque-Rivera and her crew deserve a round of applause for their relentless efforts and can-do spirit!
So, as the tech crew worked to get the show rolling, we were all treated to some jokes from the crowd! Kids from the audience got to come up on stage and tell their favorite jokes. How fun!
When the lights went down and the show got underway, playtime was over. This was serious stuff! These kids came with their “A” game, and they knew how to deliver.
After the Pledge of Allegiance and a wonderful rendition of our National Anthem by members of the 4th grade chorus, 1st graders from Mrs. Connors & Mrs. Roma’s classes came together to entertain us. Both numbers were accompanied by our own 2nd grade teacher, and unparalleled MC, Mr. Johnson. Filling in for KPS music teacher Mrs. Schultz, who had taken ill just days before the show, Mr. Johnson pulled double duty with his usual aplomb and good nature. What a great guy!
Each act was a stand-out, and would have been considered a highlight of any other show. Beautiful piano renditions, karate demonstrations, and dance numbers shared the stage with some unique acts such as a wonderful tap dancing number, a baton twirler and even a few young Jedi Masters! It was, by far, the most eclectic and creative show in KPS Talent Showcase history!
When Mrs. Cardillo’s class hit the stage with the nostalgic “Conjunction Junction” routine, they combined word power and cuteness to remind us all that learning is still fun at KPS!
Two of our After School Enrichment classes put forth acts this year! Seven Star School of the Performing Arts, inspired KPS students to rock the house with a big production number to “High School Musical”. Bonnie and John Ryerson of the Pied Piper Youth Theater, took us all back to our childhoods with the sweet-natured “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” from Peter Pan. The instructors for both classes really went the extra mile for our kids… check out their websites and utilize their services for your kids!
One of the new features this year was Annalena Fusco, and her commercial messages! Highlighting some of the great products and services your KPSPTO provides was a fun and entertaining way to get the word out! Great job Annalena!
Of course, it just wouldn’t be a KPS Talent Showcase without a rousing first act closing number by our teachers! True to form, Mrs. Bruno-Burton, Ms. Raymond, Mrs. Chase and the ever-popular Mr. Tompkins did a star turn to the sounds of “Fame”, complete with leg warmers and ‘80s regalia!
Along with the Tech crew, there were so many folks who came together to give of their time. Without them, a show like this could never be done. Laura Geoghegan returned as our Backstage Captain, who, along with KPS moms Mia Kovacs and Cindy Briley, made sure that each kid had their shot at fame! Mrs. Geoghegan even brought along her children, KPS alums Margaret and Robert Geoghegan, to make sure all went well. Margaret, who brought down the house during last year’s show with her vocal stylings, was the perfect backstage handler, making sure all of the kids were comfortable and confident before they went on!
KPS staffer Ms. Alison came to help, as did many of our wonderful parents. From Mrs. Sugar and Mrs. Fink taking tickets, to Mrs. Schanil, Mrs. Stenger and Mrs. Cassidy handling the 50/50 duties, to all of the KPSPTO volunteers working on various parts of the show, it’s clear that when we all work together with a common goal, there is nothing we can’t do.
As always, a big THANKS has to go out to Ms. Pinkerton, for allowing us to undertake such a monster of an event. And to Mrs. Emmeluth, for fielding so many phone calls and answering so many questions about the show. It all begins and ends with you!
